NLC India Limited (NLCIL), formerly known as Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited, is a prominent public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. Operations and Capacity:

  • Lignite Mining: NLCIL operates three opencast lignite mines in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, with a combined capacity of 28 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Additionally, it manages an opencast lignite mine in Barsingsar, Rajasthan, with a capacity of 2.10 MTPA.
  • Coal Mining: The company has expanded into coal mining with the Talabira II & III coal mines in Odisha, boasting a capacity of 20 MTPA.
  • Power Generation: NLCIL’s power generation portfolio includes lignite-based thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of 3,640 MW. It also operates a 1,000 MW coal-based thermal power station in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, through its subsidiary, NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited (NTPL).
  • Renewable Energy: Demonstrating a commitment to sustainable energy, NLCIL has diversified into renewable energy sources, commissioning 1,404 MW of solar power projects and 51 MW of wind power projects.

  • Environmental Initiatives: In early November 2024, NLCIL concluded a special environment campaign, inaugurating various eco-friendly projects aimed at promoting cleanliness and biodiversity within its operations.
  • Financial Performance: In the second quarter of the fiscal year 2025, NLCIL reported significant revenue growth, attributed to record coal production and strategic advancements in renewable energy, despite facing operational challenges.
